COOTIE STARK

Cootie Stark (1926-2005) was born in Abbeville, South Carolina to a farming family. He took an early interest in music and in the late 30s learned from blues originators such as Uncle Chump, Pink Anderson, Baby Tate, John Olivee, Chilly Wind and Peg Leg Sam. Cootie spent 50 years as a street musician fearlessly traveling throughout South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Arkansas, Ohio and Kentucky, with very limited vision and eventually blindness. In 1997 he opened for Aretha Frankin at the Newport R&B Festival and subsequently appeared at 48 cities backed by Taj Mahal and toured Europe over a dozen times.
